It is an excellent digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for your computer, capable of being used both with and without a driver. Using a driver allows you to choose a higher sampling rate, with 96K having no apparent delay. Additionally, it functions as a DAC for your smartphone.
The device also comes with a built-in headphone amplifier that can handle headphones with an impedance of 250 ohms, although it may not reach very loud volumes.
The non-touch display is really pleasant and has an ideal size for easily viewing the track list. Additionally, the included remote control is really practical to touch any of the buttons on the device or use the rotary encoder.
The device operates using a Linux operating system and boots within a time span of 15 seconds.
But not all is perfect:
The headphone amplifier functions only when the line output is deactivated in the menu. It is not possible to have both simultaneously.
The DAC cannot be used with coax or toslink inputs, only USB.
There is an option to select the input, but typically, once you connect a computer, it automatically chooses the digital-to-analog converter. Unfortunately, it also disconnects the USB drives that are connected (except for the SD card). At least, this process is rapid.
There are no built-in streaming applications like Spotify Connect or Tidal. You have the option to use Airplay, but it may be more convenient to connect your computer through USB.
The Bluetooth function is just satisfactory. It is capable of receiving or sending data, but it cannot be used simultaneously with the HiBy APP. (hiBy Link has to be toggled in the menue)
There are issues with the firmware that need to be addressed. When files are deleted, the indexing does not remove their entries. Additionally, there is no way to extract or backup playlists. It is also not possible to adjust the integrated DAC.
Unfortunately, the company SMSL apparently provides no assistance. They neglect to respond to emails or posts on Facebook, and there is little chance that they will release an enhanced software. This is truly disappointing, considering the hardware itself is of high quality.
