I have to admit, the speakers are amazing, but don’t get too excited about their performance just by reading the reviews all over the Internet. It’s true that they dig quite deep for their size, but let’s not forget that they employ as small as 4” mid/bass driver after all. I would say the Overnight Sensations MT are good example for well implemented design with such small drivers, but “defying the laws of physics”, as one reviewer has put it, is a bit of exaggeration.
That being said, I still give them high rating for they have other virtues and are worthy of their own. In my opinion, they are excellent desktop speakers, especially when space is scarce or limited. You can always get an active subwoofer, should you need more authority in the bass department. I for one, would like to explore this option for sure, but for now I’m more than happy with my current setup without a subwoofer - just the speakers in a near-field configuration on my desktop. So, if you decide to build them, I would recommend avoiding placing them in a large room and away from you. Their full potential is as near-field speakers in a small room - preferably on a desktop or as TV sound in a bedroom for instance. They’re quite good for this job - nicely expressed and detailed midrange, combined with great clarity, but without fatigue.
My only concern is the price. There’re similarly priced commercial designs out there which look and may even sound better than the Overnight Sensations. I personally prefer the DIY way, but if I have to recommend them to a friend, I would probably hesitate to do so, just because of the price. Hence the 4 stars.
